TikTok is a video-sharing social networking platform and one of the fastest-growing social media platforms in the world.

This year alone, TikTok was downloaded more than 175 million times before the end of March alone and will see its popularity continue to rise.

Why do you need to get involved with TikTok?

As TikTok is now the most downloaded social media app in the world, it won’t take long before it surpasses Instagram and YouTube as the most used.

My kids love to watch YouTube and I am subjected to the most ridiculous (kid-friendly) content every day. But what I have noticed is that progressively, we are watching TikTok videos that have been turned into YouTube posts.  

A Huge Audience

There are now billions of users on TikTok, think of the potential audience! And that audience, contrary to popular belief, is not just teenagers dancing.

Although it primarily set out to be an app for teenagers and young adults, it is now evident that all generations are realising the power (and entertainment value) of TikTok and jumping aboard.

My FYP feed is such a mixture of all ages, I really believe that TikTok is now an app for all!

I rarely see anything I can’t relate to and this is because, like Instagram, your feed can be tailored to your likes, as long as you let the app know what it is you want to see.

You need to engage with a similar audience and niche to yourself so you can be shown more interior and DIY videos, cats falling off kitchen units or travel inspiration. Whatever floats your boat!

This is the beauty of TikTok. It doesn’t matter what your brand, business or blog is about. There is room for everyone.

It’s Fun

Probably one of the biggest reasons why I enjoy using the app. It is fun, upbeat and often informative.

Instagram can take itself too seriously at times and it has definitely become very competitive and repetitive in the last year.

I find myself getting bored scrolling through Instagram.

TikTok was merged with Musical.ly in August 2018 which was a social network built on music, lip-syncing and dancing. It is primarily a music social media app and I think that’s why it has an advantage on Instagram.

What I love about TikTok is that I will still see the things I enjoy watching, but my feed will also be dotted with randomness and it doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Filters of funny faces, memes and dog videos can sit happily alongside the DIY short videos that I am prone to watching.

More time spent

Because the app is fun, users tend to spend more time on the app. The average TikTok user across the world spends 52 minutes on the app each day. Compare this with the average time of 29 minutes a day spent on Instagram, you can already see which is the more popular app.

It is great for businesses, marketers and content creators and you will be rewarded for creating more content on the app.

More eyes on your content

Taking into account the previous points, it is obvious that you will be able to get more eyes on your content. Even though I have 6 times more followers on Instagram, I have had the most views (over 3 million) on one post.

The potential to get more views on your videos is huge, regardless of how big your following is.

Direct effect on your engagement on other social media channels

The power of TikTok shouldn’t be underestimated. When one of my videos goes viral, I notice a huge upsurge of followers on my Instagram account and traffic to my blog.

This cannot be said for Instagram.

You can link your Instagram directly in your TikTok bio but you can’t do this the other way round. I think this speaks volumes about the fact that TikTok doesn’t worry about the competition from Instagram.

Instagram however, is running scared and basically copying everything TikTok is doing.

A huge influence on your sales

You may have heard the term “TikTok made me buy it” and the hashtag #tiktokmademebuyit currently has over 15 billion views.

This is the power of TikTok. I am always seeing how small businesses have exploded because they put their time and effort into creating for TikTok.

Songwriters and artists have got their big breakthrough on TikTok (like Mimi Webb) and small businesses, like @thesilklabs (who sell silk scrunchies), saw over 200 customers order a product from one TikTok alone.

If you’re a small business, why are you not on there already?

It’s not just about sales

This also goes for online businesses and blogs. When a video has gone viral for me on TikTok, I see an influx of people to my blog. I have a linktree link on TikTok and nowhere else.

Often, linktree is my second biggest referral after Pinterest.

It is not glitchy!

One of my biggest bugbears of Instagram is that it is hugely glitchy and enormously frustrating.

For reasons unknown, my @melaniejadedesign Instagram account (which is set to a Creator account) does not currently have access to music, so I can only use uncopyrighted songs.

Some days I can’t upload any videos to Stories. Some days my links in Stories don’t work. And don’t get me started on when I’ve written a long-winded caption for Instagram to dump the post into a black hole, never to be retrieved again.

I was over the glitchy nature of Instagram a long time ago. It is constantly telling users it is an app for creators and actively encourages content creators to use the app.

It then takes the tools away necessary to be successful as an influencer.

In the 3 years that I’ve been using TikTok, I have not come across a glitch once. All the tools are there to use readily and not only that, TikTok has a whole area for its creators with access to trends, sounds, hashtags, how to create a viral post and so on.

Instagram seriously needs to pay attention.

There are so many reasons to get yourself on TikTok.

I often get asked, or see comments about how the platform is a hive for trolls, but they really are few and far between.

Mainly, I just tend to laugh the horrible messages away. There is no point getting upset about what someone, who you have never met, has said to you!

I also read about how there is no community over there and I have to agree with this one.

I mainly engage with people I met on Instagram as we all pat ourselves on the back for a job well done on TikTok too! Haha.

But this doesn’t really bother me. I see my social media channels as part of my business and I’m more than happy to just post and run. To be honest, I am so bored of telling everyone how lovely their living room is for the 1,398 time.

Finally, is it an app just for kids? Well, 100% no! Everyone I engage with are fully grown adults and enjoying the app. The beauty of TikTok is, that it’s a storytelling app and we all love to tell a good story!
