Where do you start with TikTok? In the last blog post, I talked about why TikTok was extremely important for your business and how it’s becoming the biggest social media platform in the world.

Have you got an account and have been watching from the sidelines for a while but haven’t posted yet? Or, you’ve been aimlessly posting with no real strategy and are yet to have any traffic, engagement or success.

Only a few months ago I was still having conversations with people about how they disliked TikTok and couldn’t see how it would help them. That TikTok was all about teenagers, dancing and trends and it just isn’t the platform for them.  

As business owners, content creators and bloggers, we can’t ignore TikTok anymore. The platform is growing at a rate only other social media apps can dream of and the potential to go viral on TikTok is huge.

TikTok users can create short-form videos ranging from 5 seconds to 3 minutes and add trending sounds from its massive music library.

It is a marketing powerhouse where stars are born (like Olivia Rodriguez and Mimi Webb for example) and can create record sales for small businesses.

Brand Strategy

There are plenty of accounts on TikTok where there doesn’t seem to be a strategy at all. Just people lip-syncing and dancing to trending sounds and talking about controversial subjects.

Social media just loves a controversial subject!

As a business owner, content creator and blogger, it is always best to have a brand strategy.

What are you trying to get across to your audience? Do you have something to sell? Are you a travel writer? Try and stick to a theme or niche so your audience knows what you are about and can follow and come back for more.

This makes it easier to sell products, direct people to your blog and work with brands as a content creator.

Unless you are Kim Kardashian, if you’re talking about your latest holiday to Italy and then trying to sell a steering wheel cover in your next video, are people going to keep coming back?

I doubt it.

Our accounts are like online magazines. If I bought a House & Garden magazine and they started covering the latest sports car trends, I probably wouldn’t buy it again.

Have you got a story to tell?

Have you gone down a particular path to get to where you are today? Did you leave your 9 – 5 job and become your own boss? Have you renovated several homes and managed to move up the property ladder?

People love stories and in particular, success stories. I see a lot of “how I can afford my home” posts on Instagram as they are inspiring to the viewers and help us believe that we can also do it.

It doesn’t really matter what your story is, TikTok has covered everything.

From an American living in the UK and telling us daily stories about the differences between the two countries, to people deciding to give up alcohol.

We all have a story to tell!

Expertise or Knowledge

I think we all know more than we credit ourselves for.

I do a lot of painting and DIY in my home and when I first started posting to Instagram on my interior account – @melaniejadedesign – I didn’t really show people how to, or what I did. I enjoy painting a room and find it easy, so I just assumed that other people did too.

I love a paint and DIY project!

Apparently not.

This is a really important life lesson and one that spurred me on to start Be Social With Media.

I have built up a lot of knowledge about being a content creator on Instagram over the years. I was constantly asked for help and bombarded with questions about how to turn creating and blogging into a full-time job.

Everyone has some degree of knowledge or expertise in a given area, this knowledge may be just the thing someone else is looking for.

It could be how to use a digital camera, how to create meals for the week for your kids or even how to arrange a bunch of flowers. You will know how to do something that others find hard.

There is a reason why the online course sector is booming. The online education market is set to reach $350 million by 2025.

What might seem easy to you, is expertise gold to others.

Ideal Audience

If you have thought about your brand and brand strategy, then you should have a good idea of who your ideal audience is. This is particularly important if you have a product or something to sell.

Who is your product or service aimed at? By figuring out who you want to attract to your posts and account, creating your TikTok account should come relatively easy.

This ties in nicely with communication

If you know who your ideal audience is, you will know what posts resonate with them best.

Do you need to change the style of posts and music to attract certain generations and effectively communicate with them?

I much prefer 90s music and will always be drawn to a post that plays 90s dance tunes. However, teenagers will want to hear and see something more current. Unless it’s Kate Bush!


We all have interests and TikTok is THE best place to share them.

There really are accounts for all kinds of interests on TikTok and I think that’s the beauty of the platform.

I have seen train spotters with huge followings and people dressing up in inflatable costumes and dancing to music (although I’m not sure this is the person’s hobby as such. He just seems to have stumbled onto something people love and is stuck in a never-ending loop of running around in a blow-up outfit).

If you don’t have a particular product to sell or blog to promote and still want to get involved in social media, hobbies are the best place to start.

You could start an online book club. Or create posts around current trends. It really doesn’t matter.

Have you already got a website, Facebook, blog or Instagram account but don’t know how to translate this over to TikTok?

Answer questions! I’m sure you get asked loads of questions on other social media platforms, so answer them in your first TikTok posts.

Some of my best TikTok posts have basically been me answering questions from previous posts.

There’s not a lot of thought into some of these viral posts!

And finally, music

If you’re still not sure about what to post, my best advice to you is to scroll through TikTok and see what catches your eye.

You know what you like and it is so much easier to produce content when you actually like the content you’re producing yourself. If you know what I mean? 😊

When I’m stuck for something to post, I will sit and scroll through TikTok for inspiration. More often than not, I will come across a song or audio that I love and my post ideas will spring up from that.

This is why music is so important on TikTok, it is pretty much the backbone of all posts!
